Nicholas Van Valen has over 20 years of experience as an attorney, and has been lead, or co-counsel, in over 75 jury trials, both criminal and civil, in both state and federal courts, statewide, in Florida. He has extensive experience in handling lawsuits involving catastrophic injuries, and wrongful death, and in evaluating, preparing, and litigating to trial, cases involving serious trucking accidents, defective products, negligent security, premises liability, and insurance coverage disputes. Mr. Van Valen has handled hundreds of personal injury cases, as well as cases involving wrongful death. He has both prosecuted and defended serious personal injury lawsuits, often involving damages in the millions of dollars, and brings a wealth of insight and experience, obtained from all perspectives, to every case he handles.
Before entering the private sector, Mr. Van Valen began his career as an attorney with the Miami-Dade County Public Defender’s office, where he spent six years as a trial attorney. He tried dozens of cases to jury verdict, ranging is seriousness from misdemeanors, to serious felonies. This criminal court experience well serves his clients who may be injured as a result of being a victim of crime such as sexual assault, gun violence and murder and, as he understands all facets of how the criminal matter may impact the civil matter.
Mr. Van Valen earned his bachelor’s of arts degree from the University of Victoria, Victoria, B.C., Canada. Additionally, he completed a second bachelor’s of arts degree at Simon Fraser University, in Burnaby, B.C., Canada. He then graduated from Quinnipiac University, School of Law, in Hamden, Connecticut, where he earned his Juris Doctor degree.
Mr. Van Valen has been a member of the Florida Bar, since 1994, and is admitted to practice in front of the U.S District Court, for the Southern, and Middle Districts of Florida. Additionally, he is admitted to the State Bar of Georgia.
